Summer is here! Which means the birds are chirping, the squirrels have come out to play and the insects are back. Some people might not be excited about the insects being back, but with the insects being back it means the beauty of the butterflies will also start floating around your flower gardens. In anticipation of this beauty we created a Butterfly Forest multimedia painting activity to help us wait out the time left for the butterflies to appear. Its a great way to spend the afternoon and can be completed by any level of craftyness.

Materials:

  • Canvas or thick white paper
  • patterned paper
  • butterfly tracers
  • paint (black & sky colour)
  • glue

Directions:

Paint a thick dark line on the bottom of your canvas with your sky colour. Sky colour means whatever background colour you would like to use. You can use the traditional Blue, orange, red, pink, or even green. We choose purple for ours. Dip your brush into some water then spread your paint out so the colour become lighter as you go up the canvas. Let it dry.

Add some black whispy trees. Let it Dry.

Cut out the butterfly tracers then trace them onto the blank side of the patterned paper. You can either use our butterfly tracer(which can be found by clicking on the butterfly tracer in the materials list), find some of your own or just draw some butterfly shapes onto your patterned paper. Cut out as many butterflies as you would like for your forest. Fold your butterflies in half.

Using a small amount of glue to add them to your forest. After the glue has dried fold the wing towards each other so it looks like they are flying
